Action Alert!

Many of you are aware that during the most recent legislative session, the Tennessee legislature established the Tennessee Center for Nursing Advancement as a part of the Appalachian Highlands Center for Nursing Advancement. The East Tennessee State University College of Nursing will administer the center.

Dr. Kathryn Wilhoit has been named the inaugural Director of Center and is seeking input from a variety of stakeholders throughout the state.

The Tennessee Center for Nursing Advancement is charged with:

  • Developing a statewide plan for nurses based on a detailed analysis of workforce needs;
  • Establishing and maintaining a database of nursing workforce needs, including current data and future projects; and
  • Routinely convening representatives of nursing professionals, healthcare professional organizations, business and industry leaders, and other leaders to solicit their reviews and recommendations.
  • Recognizing nurses and the accomplishments of nurses and conveying the positive image of nursing to Tennessee
  • Increasing the pipeline for nursing education, thus increasing the number of qualified nurses to care for Tennesseans.

To that end, the center will be presenting a 2022 Tennessee Board of Nursing Update and listening sessions that will take place across the state with the purpose of gathering input for a Tennessee Nursing Strategic Plan, which will ultimately be presented to the Governor’s office and the Tennessee Legislature.

The sessions will be open to any stakeholder(s) who are interested in increasing the number of nurses across the state, including RNs, LPNs, CNAs, all academic levels of education for CNA, LPN and RNs, hospital nurses and leaders, faculty, students, long-term care, Home and Hospice care and other providers.

There will be two listening sessions at each of the sites listed below. One session is from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., and the other will begin at 1:30 p.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m. There is no admission charge to attend these sessions, and FREE NURSING CEUs are AVAILABLE to those who attend.

There is a limit of one hundred (100) participants per session.

To help make these sessions a success, we need your help! Volunteers may choose to serve as a Local Champion, a Session Facilitator, or both:

  • Local Champion - Publicizes the event by sharing information with local organizations (news outlets, healthcare organizations, nursing schools, etc.). Actively recruits local participants and encourages the use of the online registration process.
  • Session Facilitator - Assists with logistics (set-up, registration, tear-down) and facilitates group discussion using a SWOT analysis approach. Training will be provided via Zoom.

As a TNA member, we hope you will consider filling one of the volunteer roles specified above and that you will promote these sessions throughout your practice and beyond and encourage those within your professional network to register.
